Parris Island has a unique and rich history marked by international occupation and military activity. While it has been host to both the United States Army and Navy, it has been home to the Marine Corps for over a century. You can learn more at the Parris Island Museum, which is just one of many attractions in the area. Others include Hunting Island State Park and the Penn Center, the site of one of the country’s first schools for freed slaves. There are also many annual events such as the Native Island Gullah Celebration and the Yemassee Shrimp Festival.
Parris Island Museum, which proudly resides in the War Memorial Building at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, is a magnificent monument to Marines of the past as well as a source of inspiration and opportunity for Marines of the future. As one of the largest and most visited museums in the southeastern United States, Parris Island Museum houses over 1500 artifacts and 2000 photographs, maps, and pictures in its nearly 6000 square feet of exhibit space.
